California Vehicle Verifier Surety Bonds

Anyone who inspects, records, documents and submits to the California Department of Motor Vehicles for the purposes of registering or transferring ownership of vehicles is known as a Vehicle Verifier. Vehicle Verifiers must apply for a license with the DMV, which includes submitting a $5,000 surety bond. These DMV surety bonds ensure that the vehicle verifier or inspector shall not cause any financial loss to the State of California resulting from unethical business conduct under the vehicle verifier permit. The bond also protects against losses to third parties due to incorrect verification of an engine, vehicle verification number or hull identification number. The surety bond runs continuously through subsequent licensing and permit periods until cancelled.

In addition to the bond, an OL 29 Personal History Questionnaire and $50 Non-refundable application fee is required. A complete guide for Vehicle Verifiers can be found here.

Under Article 13, Chapter 2, Title 14, Part 2 of the Code of Civil Procedure, the surety reserves the right to cancel the bond.
